here’s some more catchup reviews for #TheDarkTower#Detroit#TheGlassCastle and #TheHitmansBodyguard
Detroit: An uncomfortable, harrowing experience that only Kathryn Bigelow could deliver in such an explosive, yet reserved way. Unfortunately, what works the most about Detroit is how often it parallels to our society today and it is a devastating watch. Kathryn Bigelow is a master of making the dramatizational, biographical thrillers that are topical to our society and Detroit is no exception to that. The performances are as good as the directing with Jon Boyega giving a stellar turn, but it’s Will Poulter who steals every scene he’s in as the sadistic, immoral and racist cop. The few problems I had with it are it is definitely just a bit too long and the scene that takes place in the motel, while very important to the story, could have been trimmed down at least by a bit. Nevertheless, Detroit is still a disturbing but important watch that unfortunately mirrors our society today in all the wrong ways. 8.4/10
Glass: I really don’t think this got the attention it deserved. At least to me, I really think this is an underrated movie that is better than most critics have suggested it to be. As a fan of the memoir it is based on, I think director Destin Daniel Cretton’s approach to the subject matter was certainly admirable, if not completely redeemable. Sometimes it would delve into traditional soapy melodrama and sometimes it would actually be an affecting, powerful drama. My issue with the film is that it is just incredibly uneven in the way it portrays the hard hitting subject matter. However, the performances from everybody involved are all truly great. Brie Larson as Jeanette Walls proves herself yet again as one of the brightest talents working today and I will continue to watch literally anything that she is in. Woody Harrelson gives a stirring performance as Walls’ father, delivering one of the strongest performances of the year and one that I will at least remember as a standout one this year. The Glass Castle’s is a story about resilience, strength of the human spirit in hard times (CONT IN COMMENTS)
