According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Phillies and free-agent pitcher Jake Arrieta are "having dialogue." The Phillies have been interested in the 31-year old righty the entire free agency period, but it seems that they are now ramping it up. The only major blockage is the contract details. Arrieta wants long-term security, but the Phillies are currently only looking to hand out short-term deals.
Arrieta, 31, has connections with a large portion of the Phillies front office. Most of them have ties to the Baltimore Orioles, where Arrieta started his career. The dominoes have begun to fall in free agency, and Arrieta is one of the biggest names still unsigned. It's already mid-February, so I doubt he will want to be among the unemployed population much longer. -
Arrieta, a 2016 World Series champion, had a rocky first half last season before fixing things up after the All-Star Break. He finished 14-10 with a 3.53 ERA in 168 innings. Just two seasons ago, Arrieta was a Cy Young winner. He hasn't been as good, but could make a formidable 1-2 punch with Aaron Nola at the top of the rotation.
I really want to see this deal get one. We didn't get Darvish (didn't really want him anyway), and there doesn't seem to be any traction with Lance Lynn or Alex Cobb. I think we need to strike before someone else does, and just give him a short term deal with a high average salary. My offer to Jake would be 3 years/$80 million.
Do you want the Phillies to sign Jake Arrieta? If so, what contract would you offer him? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Jake Arrieta and the Phillies are in contract discussions. He wants a long-term deal while we want him on a short-term deal. This would be a huge signing for the Phillies, as our starting lineup is our main weakness this season. Will the @Phillies make it happen???#GoPhils#JakeArrieta#Philly#BeBold
