DIET BREAK FOR FASTER FAT LOSS . I did a post yesterday about how taking a break from dieting will help you stick to your diet and actually, you know, reach your goal. . I had so many questions about what this break means and what to eat and so on so I thought I’d give a quick outline here. . A diet break isn’t an excuse to go on a binge fest and eat yourself into a coma. It’s simply a planned break from eating at a calorie deficit. . During the diet break which will last for 2 weeks, you’ll be eating at maintenance calories which is theoretically roughly about 500 calories more than what you were eating when in a calorie deficit. . Since you have these extra calories to enjoy that means you can eat more and plan to have the occasional treat or drink. Nothing excessive though. . By allowing yourself these planned breaks you will keep your sanity and this will encourage consistency. . There are other advantages both hormonal and physiological which I’ve touched on before but won’t get into because there’s not enough space to type. . Just know that a diet break isn’t a licence to eat your heart out. Be sensible and stick with mostly minimally processed whole foods with a sprinkling of not so wholesome foods. . This post clears up a myth about the fat burning zone which my buddy @roballenfitness explains succinctly . - 🔥Fat Burning Zone 🔥 . 🔥You’ve all seen the “Fat Burning Zone” chart on cardio machines. A certain % of your max heart rate where you’ll be burning fat, presumably. So if you’re trying to lose fat, that seems like the right thing to do, right? Well not necessarily. . 🔥At rest, we are burning almost 100% fat. This can vary a bit depending on our diet and genetics but pretty much all fat. As the intensity of exercise increases, the % of energy burnt from fat starts to go lower and be at almost 0% at near maximal exertion. 100% from fat seems way better, right? 100% of 1 calorie though...at max intensity, it’s 0% of 20 calories. Here’s where I’m going with this. . 🔥The fat burning zone is where the fat % curve and the total calorie curve intersect. The highest number of calories burnt at the highest % of fat. So it is useful. The problem is that most people do cardio in the fat burning zone for 20 minutes and think they got a good workout in. To burn a decent number of calories, they would have had to go for an hour!!! . 🔥So - If you just want to lose weight, you’re better off focusing on burning calories and not only fat calories. . 🔥There’s nothing wrong with doing long, low intensity training. Many people love jogging and cycling for a few hours. Is it the most time efficient way to lose weight? Definitely not. They treat you like a little man, which is not only insulting but completely unrealistic. . As if you didn’t have it bad enough with your menstrual cycle and weekly hormonal shifts, I’m sure the last thing you want is to be treated like a man. . The difference in metabolism speed between a man and a women of similar build and height is not huge but still different. . In fact the difference is only about 50-60 calories a day. Not huge, but a difference still. . Remember, for the petite female, you have a far smaller margin of error. . To illustrate my point I’ve pitted a man and a women against each other who both have 4 glasses of red wine. . When you compare how much of their theoretical calorie deficit that accounts for, it’s 33% for the petite female versus only 22% for the man. . That leaves the women with only 1000 calories to eat versus 1720 calories for the guy to eat and still be able to lose weight. . Some coaches will not agree with me and say that it’s all relative and it’s a simple case of eating less or a simple case of creating a calorie deficit, but clearly they haven’t had much experience working with petite females. Especially, petite females that don’t workout. . I agree, it does all boil down to a calorie deficit but getting there and being consistent is that more challenging for the petite female. . So if you’re petite then you really do have to be more disciplined. Not only that, you can’t rely on minimal cardio and diet to create a calorie deficit like some coaches recommend. .
