|Anchorage Police Department, AK, USA| Established in 1921 APD patrols Alaska's most populated city; roughly 280,000. What was known originally as 'Ship Creek Landing', Anchorage's first law enforcement precense were US Marshals. However, on 01/01/1921 after Anchorage became incorporated, John J. Sturgus became the first Chief of Police. Chief Sturgus was the only officer in the entire department! Sadly, he was killed in the line of duty six weeks later, with his own gun. The murderer was never taken into custody. Chief Sturgus' death was the first unsolved homicide in APD history.
Years later, APD has grown to about 360 sworn officers. Due to Alaska being home to large tracts of federal lands and its proximity to Russia, APD also works closely with various federal law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, US Customs and Border Protection and US Secret Service. With a large joint US Army-Air Force Base (Joint Base Elemendorf-Richardson) in its boundaries, APD works closely with the US Army and Air Force military police, Security Police, Defense Dept Police and the criminal investigation agencies, Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the US Army and Office of Special Investigations (OSI) of the Air Force. The US Coast Guard also patrols waterways in the city limits which are popular with boaters. The US Forest Service law enforcement division also patrols USFS lands that border Anchorage! ————————————————————————
Thank you @anchoragepolice for the patch, it has been on my bucket list forever to visit Alaska. When I do, I will personally drop off some patches and challenge coins at APD headquarters! #thinblueline#policepatches#police#deputy#sheriff#trooper#tactical#patches#collection#patrol#patchpatrol#cops#coplife#lawenforcement#leo#backtheblue#policelife#cops#backtheblue#tbl#alaska#ak#apd#anchorage#anchoragepolice#code3#sheepdog
