Turn your phone off now and again.
You are not that important. And if you are? You have a problem.
As leaders we need to check our motives. There is a certain 'allure' in being needed. There is a certain reward for being the go to person. The centre. The key link in the chain.
The need to be needed is a powerful driver for us all. It affirms our identity. It affirms our status. It affirms our value.
But something is wrong if all roads lead to me.
Because you are not that important. You are not that good. And the day you leave your job, there will be another (or it may take 2 or 3 if you were that good!) who will fill your place. They may talk about you over a coffee. The good (or bad) old days. But this will fade. And the calls will stop.
So do yourself a favour, and grow others. Build an enterprise that operates effectively without you. Grow a team of leaders. Who can go on without you. Who can make decisions. Who can get the job done. Who aren't reliant on you.
Then you can smile to yourself. Because you know that you have invested in people. And they will go on beyond your tenure.
And it won't matter if your phone is on silent.
Some merger news! Looks like this is actually going to happen. An example of what companies do when they want to get stronger and bigger- they merge! Do you think this will affect Verizon and similar businesses in any way? Share in the comments!
