As some of you may know, I sheltered a stray cat during the first of our last few nor’ easters. She was hanging out around our apartment for quite a while, but never used to let me touch her. I always spoke to her when I was outside, and I gradually gained her trust.
I’ve been having a hard time dealing with the fact that Ocean is 17, and is showing her age. She spends most of her time sleeping these days, and sometimes she seems to forget where she is. She has been my best friend for so long, I could not imagine life without her, and especially with another cat. I could not replace her.
I did not choose Zelda, she chose us. I truly feel that she showed up to teach us that are hearts are ever expanding. But as much as I needed her, she needed us. I took her to the vet this morning, who confirmed my suspicions.... Zelda is pregnant. I have been in touch with a wonderful rescue, who is not only going to handle the adoptions of the kittens, but TNR the rest of the cats in our neighborhood as well. Something that I should have acted on a long time ago. This is not cute, this is not something to be celebrated. This is a tragedy. Approximately 1.4 million cats and kittens are euthanized every year, because there are simply not enough homes for them all. This is a problem created by humans, and we are the ones who need to fix it. Please, please, spay and neuter your pets. Reach out to rescues in your area about TNR (trap, neuter, return), as this is the most effective way to combat this problem. Donate to your local animal shelters, and advocate for the animals. It’s time to start taking responsibility, and helping those who can’t help themselves. .
