This. C’mon, I know most (white Christian (males especially)) don’t recognize the Black Panthers (of West Oakland, not of West Wakanda) as a good and necessary force against our tyrannical system. One source of evidence I would draw from is your dismissal of the need and good of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and your silly #alllivesmatter and #bluelivesmatter (those two are cultural givens). We could also discuss the vilification of terms like communism and people like Castro and Che (which I’m not prepared to take a definitive stance on - I am prepared to say that whatever your knee jerk reaction to those names is, it has probably been programmed by the same system that would lead Americans to believe the other aforementioned lies/misconceptions). My students and I have been discussing the teacher-gun topic a lot and it is almost unanimous that it’s a bad idea, especially given these two things: 1. If systemic racism and racist ideology is found in the police (not all police are bad nor racist), then what’s stops the same for being true in the classroom? Also, the exact people we don’t want wielding a weapon anywhere, would be the first teachers to jump at the opportunity. It’s thick. Love you all and would love to engage on this.
