Today is my Mums birthday. I don’t know if she understands what the fuss is for or that today marks 81 years of being the kindest soul I know. We have battled through strokes, bowel problems, lumps and bumps, losing my dad and the ill health that old age inevitably brings but dementia and Alzheimer’s are our hardest battle to date. Strokes alter personality but dementia steals memories. That’s something I’m finding really hard to accept. Watching Mums gradual decline has really made me realise just how important it is to take the time to appreciate the small things, really see the positives in every day. To make memories, go on adventures and worry less about other people’s opinions. To live my life, be happy and not be held back by my fears and insecurities. To make sure I’m in the photos of precious family moments; despite how I feel about my appearance because my kids aren’t looking for my flaws they just see me. Mum always says you never stop learning and that hard times are character building opportunities! Sometimes, you have to live the lesson to really understand it. On her birthday I’m thankful she’s still here to love and teach our family what life and love is really all about.
