QOTP: Who is your godly parent?
I’m a Daughter of Poseidon! I think my favorite character is either Percy or Annabeth because they are both so strong! I love that Annabeth is typically the problem solver and has no problem putting everyone in their place!
#beautyisreadingmarch Mary Poppins - A Character Who Sets Everyone Straight
Read an excerpt of Until I Fall “It boils down to don’t leave me, I need you.” The grief surges with every exhale. “I’ll miss those crystal blue eyes, your wholesome laughter, and your beautiful heart.” The emptiness inside my heart expands. Nothingness threatening to take my soul, leaving me lifeless. “Make the pain disappear,” I sob.
“Aspen,” Dad touches my shoulder. Wrapping an arm around me, he pulls me toward him. Gently rubbing my back, he whispers, “it’s time for the service. Come with me. This will pass.”
Those words unhinge me. Tears burst out, and my chin trembles. Pain forms in the pit of my stomach, coming out like an uproar from my throat.
“When will it stop hurting?” I kiss the coffin caressing it one last time.
“In time, sweetie,” Dad responds hugging me tightly. “Time will heal your heart. I’m so sorry you lost him. He was a good man.”
He was the best. The loss is more than my heart can take. I don’t think I’ll survive. Glancing at the coffin, I send a silent prayer. Numb me. Freeze my heart. I don’t want to feel again.

Laura & Emma is a charming story depicting mother/daughter relationships in wealthy Upper East Side NYC. It winds chronologically, year by year, following Laura, Emma, Bibs, and others through life in 1980’s and 1990’s society New York. In her 30s and unmarried, Laura becomes pregnant after a strange encounter with a one night stand, and to avoid judgement from her hoity-toity friends and family, she pretends that she became pregnant instead by a Swedish sperm donor. Like in many mother/daughter stories, this one had me simultaneously laughing and full of heartache within the span of a couple of pages.
Laura, the very definition of an independent, quirky woman gave me serious Eleanor Oliphant vibes, if Eleanor wasn’t so deeply troubled. Though brought up with money, she values simplicity in life and doesn’t ask for much, and despite her liberal and independent ways, chooses to raise her daughter, Emma, in much the same way she was raised, in the upper-crust world of private schools and summer homes.
Though a lovely exploration of family and love, I felt that this book tried to touch on too many things to really dive in and talk about one thing well. It discusses topics like the AIDS epidemic, postpartum depression, wealth and class, and does all this while trying to dive deeply into the psyches of these women and their relationships to each other. In my opinion, while the writing was beautiful, and little gems dotted the narrative throughout, I often felt that these greater themes felt shallow and underplayed. Laura’s relationship with Emma was explained rather than shown to me, and I just wish that the story wasn’t so understated. That being said, I it was an easy and enjoyable read, and I totally devoured this book.
