The Open House
I’ve been excited about Dylan Minnette’s career since his work on Goosebumps, Don’t Breath and 13 Reasons. So when I saw him in a Netflix horror movie I was very excited. While Open House was creepy indeed, it was also boring and a whole lot of nothing. It’s premise was interesting although it could have been so much more.
Dylan Minnette lead this movie basically by himself. His roles are a bit stiff and brooding but something is very likeable about his charm. The actress playing his Mum was a bit useless basically only serving as a plot point. There really wasn’t much of a cast other than that.
This movie uses the proven technique of taking something normal like an open house, and making that scary. I found myself reaching for the phone though most of it which is never good sign. The last twenty minutes thoroughly freaked me out though. It was brutal! Thank goodness we can skip ahead on Netflix. The also idea really has a real franchise value to it, so here’s hoping they learn from this ones mistakes.
Verdict: 4.5/10. Overall a letdown that can’t be saved with a frightening last 20 minutes.
