I’ve finally finished! What a slog that was. Granted, being ill didn’t help but I ended up wanting to like this so much more than I actually did
There were some good parts that I enjoyed - I loved some of the characters, Alsana, Irie, Hortense and Abdul-Mickey in particular. The various and contrasting family dynamics and cultures make for entertaining and thought provoking reading. This is also one of the only books I can recall reading where dialogue and accents are written remarkably well and very cleverly.
But. There were just too many plot lines leading off into obscure places, far too difficult to follow and which came to an abrupt end. There was so much detail in backstories, surroundings and history but I didn’t feel much of it connected me to the characters. Any time that I did feel a smouldering of empathy for a character, it was lost in a dense off-shoot of text. It just lacked that hook and ultimately meant that it was too easy to put down and forget about. Truth be told, I came away pretty disappointed.
I slightly cheated with this prompt Smith wrote and finished White Teeth while she was in her final year at Cambridge. It’s a bit of a ways away from me but I’m still counting it as being written locally. There’s a woeful lack of female writers in my city they all seemed to be male!

Stephen R. Covey's book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, has been a top-seller for the simple reason that it ignores trends and pop psychology for proven principles of fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity. Celebrating its fifteenth year of helping people solve personal and professional problems, this special anniversary edition includes a new foreword and afterword written by Covey exploring the question of whether the 7 Habits are still relevant and answering some of the most common questions he has received over the past 15 years.
Like what Paul Murdin said: The night sky is a common heritage of mankind. Whoever and wherever we are, the sun, the stars and the planets shine down on us all, provoking wonder and inspiring questions about our place in the scheme of things. In contemplating the stars, we focus outwards and we are drawn out of our mundane predicament, at least for a time. Setting aside our differences with our fellow human beings, we can stand, gazing up, shoulder to shoulder.
We have come to accept this reality with equanimity, and to investigate its ramifications with even greater intensity. So let's talk about universe; how did it all start? How will it all end? Are we alone in the universe? Take me on a fascinating trip through time and space, for only thus will we fully understand the world in which we live. A captivating new sexy standalone romance by New York Times bestselling author Melissa Foster.
Special Forces veteran and Dark Knights Motorcycle Club member Bullet Whiskey lives to protect his family, their bar, and the residents of his small hometown. He’s rough, unapologetic, and haunted by a secret, painful past. He’s also a master at keeping people away, and when his sister hires gorgeous and sweet Finlay Wilson to help expand their biker bar, he knows just how to get rid of her.
After losing her boyfriend and her father, Finlay moves back to her hometown to be closer to the little family she has left. She needs her temporary job at Whiskey Bro’s to get her catering business off the ground, and she’s determined not to let the gruff, arrogant mountain of a man Bullet Whiskey scare her off.
Finlay is everything Bullet has never wanted. She’s afraid of his dog, afraid of motorcycles, and sweet enough to give him cavities, but as she weaves her way into the hearts of everyone around him, he’s powerless to resist her charms. Passion ignites, but trust doesn’t come easily, and when their pasts collide, Bullet finds out the true meaning of protecting those he loves. #BookLinks

From New York Times Bestselling Author, S.L. Scott, comes a new book that will introduce you to rock stars with heart and soul as well as revisit favorites from The Resistance.
One break is all The Crow Brothers need and we’re about to get it.
Johnny Outlaw, rock legend and lead singer of The Resistance, is here to watch us play. But he’s not the only familiar face in the crowd—killer little body, heart-shaped face, and drop-dead gorgeous.
Hannah Nichols sitting at the bar makes it hard to concentrate, sparks already reigniting. The beauty was never a groupie and tonight she’s not here to catch our show. She came to drop a bomb. “You have a son.” She underestimated me. I’ll prove to my son, and her, that I can be the dad he needs.
What is it about musicians? Why are they so damn sexy?
My heart was Jet Crow’s the moment he opened his sexy mouth and sang that first song. One stolen night with that man would never be enough, but I’m not here to fall into his bed. Again. I’m here to fight for custody of a son he’s never known.
There’s just one problem. Those sparks between us have become flames. If we’re not careful we’re both going to get burned. Click Quick!
