@everlane: “What cause did you fight for this year—and how?"
As a storyteller, I know that the best stories often come from places of extremity. It should come as no surprise, then, that 2017 has been chock-full of compelling narratives – those that resonate with our humanity and deepen our understanding of who we are and what we believe. In 2017, I fought to take ownership of my own story, to tell it on my own terms, and to empower those around me to do the same. Growing up, I thought mine was a story unworthy of being shared. I couldn’t find myself (or even iterations of myself) in books or in media, so I thought it best to stay quiet. But the older I got, the more I realized that stories of people like me – the minorities, the disenfranchised, those often overlooked – are, in some ways, the most important stories to tell. And if we don’t take ownership of them, if we don’t fight for them, if we don’t share them with everyone and anyone willing to listen, who will? My story is my weapon of choice.
