Michael Spinks shocked the world when he beat Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes. 21st September, 1985 - The Riviera, Las Vegas.
On a night Larry Holmes was destined for immortality by equalling Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 unbeaten record; the stage was set for him. He was fighting the World Light Heavyweight Champion, Michael Spinks who was naturally smaller and the bookmakers gave him a punchers chance. History was also against Spinks as no fighter in history had gone up to win the Heavyweight Title, having been the Light-Heavyweight Champion.
Spinks would go on to win a narrow unanimous points decision victory and become the new World Heavyweight Champion. The Ring Magazine named it 1985 Upset of the Year, and with the victory Michael joined his elder brother Leon as the first pair of brothers to become Heavyweight Champions. It was a truly astonishing victory.
After the fight, Holmes cut a frustrated figure as a barrage of questions came his way about missing out on the undefeated record to which he responded, “Rocky couldn’t carry my jockstrap.” Spinks would beat Holmes again in their rematch the following year, this time via a split decision victory.
