📽️ fiLmReviEw THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI [2017, UK, US - English] • Part 3 of 3 • Equally a limelight stealer like McDormand, who in my opinion would win her second Oscar for her incredible performance as Mildred, is SAM ROCKWELL’s blockheaded Dixon, Willoughby’s junior officer. It is the bigoted, racist cop with a drinking problem, and mommy’s problem, coupled with a penchant for violence who owns the film’s second major narrative arc. Combined with good writing, Dixon’s transition is beautifully executed, and a powerful emotional shift that somehow manages a closure for the seemingly impossible predicament in the story. Rockwell has been known in several “racist and redneck” roles previously, and it’s an irony that it may be this role that would win him his first Oscar, at a time when Hollywood is tackling predatory sexuality and male chauvinism. “I’m playing so many hicks and it’s not where I come from. I’m really a concrete creature, but they keep throwing me on a horse,” the Golden Globe winner once shared. Production designer INBAL WEINBERG masterly crafted the fictional town which was filmed in Silver, North Carolina. Transforming the original town’s furniture store into a police station, and offices into the advertising office, we are presented with a small town that feels like it hasn’t changed since the forties or fifties. And bringing this cinematic experience into the Southern American landscape, along with the timing where both explicate racial tension, chauvinism and loud bigotry, McDormant waves his wand and invoked a riveting tale of revenge and redemption, emotional volatility and subtlety, and most importantly, loss and hope. 📽️ fiLmReviEw THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI [2017, UK, US - English] • Part 2 of 3 • THREE BILLBOARD’s greatest gem stems from its huddling of extremely potent and antsy performances by the leading cast. How a simple story, written by McDonagh himself; wielded the biggest characters in a small town brings forth a powerful story that kept me thoroughly entertained. Leading the pack would be McDormand, bulldozing through with her unflinching, take-no-prisoners stick-to-itiveness. Flinty and glooming with titanium determination, her bereaved character is singular in her motive, will not hesitate to wage a war against the world if she has to, and throttle anyone who comes in her way. “One of the important points was that we wouldn't sentimentalise her, we wouldn't make her softer, more motherly...we never wanted to make her nicer, more palatable. Even though she's technically the hero she does things that are way out of order, indefensible...she's really three dimensional and not somebody you could say is the perfect person at all,” McDonagh shared about the role where he has written with McDormand specifically in mind. And indeed she nailed it. Married to filmmaker JOEL COEN, the sixty year-old is one of the few performers who have achieved the Triple Crown of Acting - an Oscar for the 1996 black comedy FARGO, a Tony Award for the 2011 broadway play GOOD PEOPLE and an Emmy Award for the HBO miniseries OLIVE KITTERIDGE in 2014. Playing Ebbing's revered Police Chief Willoughby, WOODY HARRELSON starts off equally egotistical as he finds himself at the forefront of the war, but inches into a harried man and exposing dimensions within his character that will touch audience - especially during the reading of a series of letters written by him towards the end. Harrelson pulls off a decent portrayal of a man caught in a complicated situation, begging for compassion with the notion that what can a small town police chief do, more so when time is not a friend. #ThreeBillboardsOutsideEbbingMissouri #ThreeBillboards #MartinMcDonagh #FrancesMcDormand #SamRockwell #WoodyHarrelson #Film #Movie #FilmReview #MovieReview #JohnHawkes #PeterDinklage #BenDavis

📽️ fiLmReviEw THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI [2017, UK, US - English] • Part 1 of 3 • British and Irish playwright, screenwriter and director, MARTIN McDONAGH hasn’t exactly made all that many films, but his third feature film in almost a decade, THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI has emerged as one of the strongest in 2017’s cinematic and film awards circuit. Already an Oscar winner for his short SIX SHOOTER in 2006 and nominated for Best Original Screenplay in 2009 for IN BRUGES, McDonagh’s plays have been equally successful, where four have competed at the Tony Awards. Traveling across America about twenty years ago, McDonagh saw an angry message on billboards that he couldn’t erase from his head, imminently giving birth to a story which has reaped Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice bids for writing and directing. The film centers on a grieving mother Mildred Hayes (FRANCES McDORMAND) who wages a war on her local police department when their lackadaisical investigation into her teenage daughter’s rape and murder seem to have circled into a halt. She rents three dilapidated billboards on the Drinkwater Road just outside the town of Ebbing, and goes on to have them emblazoned with huge lettering on a blood-red background, reading a powerful, controversial message that will turn heads and hit anyone’s nerve : RAPE WHILE DYING, AND STILL NO ARREST, HOW COME, CHIEF WILLOUGHBY? #ThreeBillboardsOutsideEbbingMissouri #ThreeBillboards #MartinMcDonagh #FrancesMcDormand #SamRockwell #WoodyHarrelson #Film #Movie #FilmReview #MovieReview #JohnHawkes #PeterDinklage #BenDavis #AwardWinning
