Took some time responding to my students' journals this morning when I woke up at 3:30 am and couldn't fall back to sleep. I told my students that I will put in the amount of effort that they put in. If that means that my students write me a long response, I will write them a long response back. Does it take a lot of time? Yes BUT, are the students and their love for writing worth it? YES!!
Two days after we took Gracie home from the hospital we bought her her very first book, “The Pout Pout Fish” by Deborah Diesen. Cuddled up in a bed at the Springhill Suites Marriott in Bakersfield, CA we awaited the clearance needed to take her from the state and to our excited families in UT. Countless times with that tiny ball of naked warmth sleeping on our chests we animatedly read. A different voice for every fish (even giving one a British accent in honor of our current home) and jesting about who could read it best.
Today there are few words that will stop this constant ball of energy mid motion. “Book” is one of those magic words. Eyes wide, she scuttles down the hallway, shoulders clear to her ears in sheer excitement to get there first. Every morning when I enter her room she pops up like a spring and points her little finger bossily at those taunting titles opposite her. And before bed when one of us holds her up so she can choose the stories for the night, she studies each cover carefully before reaching for the one she wants next. Sometimes she still chooses “The Pout Pout Fish”, like she did today — and when we read its clever rhyme, I am right back to those precious, private days with just the three of us: living, exploring and experiencing our new little world. One in which God willing, love, laughter and books will always abound.
