The New York Mets start off their 2018 spring training with a bang, beating the Braves 6-2 with impressive performances all around the lineup.
Zack Wheeler opened up the game and although only pitching one inning, he was electric, striking out two while allowing only a hit. New Met Todd Frazier got his first hit in orange and blue off a single past the shortstop. Defensive juggernaut Luis Guillorme flashed his skills at the plate with a hit, wall, RBI, and a run scored. Other pitchers who impressed were Hansel Robles, Jacob Rhame, and Corey Oswalt who all averaged 2 k’s per inning. Drew Smith tossed a scoreless ninth, also, to secure the Mets win. Other offensive players who showed their skills were Wilmer Flores, David Thompson, Phillip Evans, Amed Rosario, and Zach Borenstein. Great win and great start to the season for the Mets and new manager Mickey Callaway!
Spring Training Game Recap of Today's Mets vs Braves Game:
Mets have defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-2 for their first win of Spring Training under the new skipper Mickey Callaway.
Mets Offense: Mets bats were quiet with just 2 hits for the first 8 innings of the game, but in the bottom of the 8th the offense woke up. It was a groundout by Luis Guillorme that the Braves misplayed that opened the door for the Mets to score six runs that featured a two-run game-tying double by Zach Borenstein and three bases-loaded walks.
Mets Pitching: The pitching was stellar from the Mets only giving up one earned run. Zack Wheeler got the start on the mound for the Mets. Zack struck out two while working around a leadoff single in his only inning of work. Zack Wheeler's fastball velocity was between 94 and 97 MPH. His pitch count was 15 pitches and ten of those were for strikes.
Then the following pitchers Hansel Robles, Chris Flexen, Paul Sewald, Corey Oswalt, Jacob Rhame, Tyler Bashlor, Jamie Callahan, and Drew Smith all combined with 13 strikeouts and only giving up one earned run.
The one pitcher that impressed me the most was Corey Oswalt he pitched two full innings and struck out four in the two scoreless innings he pitched on the mound. Oswalt was the Eastern League Pitcher of the year out of Double AA for the Mets last year. Corey lead the league with a 2.37 ERA, over a span of 23 starts totaling 129.1 innings ,111 strikeouts and 39 walks. Oswalt is currently at 7.7 strikeouts and 2.7 walks per nine innings during his 2017 campaign.
Tomorrow the Mets will be playing the St. Louis Cardinals @1:10 PM on Pix 11. Seth Lugo is supposed to make the expected start on the mound followed by Kevin McGowan, Marcos Molina, P.J. Conlon, Corey Taylor, and Gerson Bautista that are also scheduled to pitch.
Baseball is back! The New York Mets took the Grapefruit League Opener 6-2 over the Atlanta Braves thanks to a 6 run eighth inning. Oswalt was the most standout player in today’s game, with Wheeler, the bullpen, and Zach Borenstein and David Thompson.
