WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Two years ago, my sister began writing a short film called Hāfu. It was borne out of frustration with the film industry for its utter lack of representation of women who look like us. Think about it for a moment. How many mixed race white and Asian actors can you name? Is it 5? Is it 1? Is it none? Why does it matter? Well, it matters because what you see on screen has a profound effect on what you internalise and believe about yourself. So naturally, with no public role models, (and a healthy dose of racism from society and peers), my sister and I grew up believing that we were lesser, that we were worse, that we were wrong. You cannot imagine the pain of growing up wishing you were white, so you can achieve and be successful and happy. You can understand why when there is a role for an Asian woman, there is bitter disappointment when that role is given to a hecking white woman (GITS ScarJo, and countless other times.) But even so, those Asian roles are just as far from our experience as white roles are, growing up as dual heritage Brits. We’re not Asian. We’re not white. So my sister decided that if there weren’t any roles for people like us, she would write them herself. Here’s where you come in! She has a kickstarter to fund the project and needs to raise over £3k by the end of the month in order for this film to fly. Can you help make that happen? Do you believe that what has been happening is wrong? Do you want to do something about it? Do you want to contribute to the solution? THIS IS YOUR CHANCE! The clickable link is in my bio! Even as little as £1 can help to make the dream come true https://t.co/PB27VHCud7
