On this day in 1990, Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide won Haiti's first democratic presidential election, by a landslide, ending Haiti's long dictatorial rule by the U.S. backed Duvaliers. He had a turbulent Presidency, falling in and out of power until he was exiled in 2004, but still stands as a symbol of democracy, especially in the face of Western interference.
