Free Agent Target: Marqise Lee (WR, Jaguars)
2017 stats: 56 rec, 702 yards, 12.5 AVG, 3 TDS
Lee is almost exactly the same size as Edelman, which is reason number one to consider him. Like I said before, Tom Brady’s favorite target isn’t a young buck anymore, and he’s taken quite a beating over the years. Lee is the best Edelman insurance policy on the market, and considering he’s spent his career competing with Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns for targets from Blake Bortles, his stats are impressive.
While he isn’t a traditional slot receiver in the way that Edelman is, he is versatile enough to play both in and outside the slot, and his speed can often make him a match up problem. You won’t see many linebackers catching him, and with the secondary tied up with Hogan, Cooks and (hopefully) Rob Gronkowski, he’d be quite a problem for opposing defenses.
Lee’s market value according to Spotrac is somewhere between $7.5 and $8.4 million average annual salary. Their base contract valuation is three years and $25 million, so while it would be more money than they’re paying anyone right now, they’ve got to lock someone up soon. All their best receivers’ contracts expire in either 2019 or 2020.
