The aurochs, a grand wild ox that once inhabited Europe, Asia and North Africa. It is the ancestor of domestic cattle which went extinct in 1627. In the 1920's / 1930's Germany tried to breed back these magnificent creatures. Part of the reason was to try to correct the mistake of man killing the species off. One of these "new" species was the Heck cattle that are also being held and protected in Oostvaardersplassen the Netherlands.
In 2014 I had the privilege to experience the yearly check-up of these wild and powerful animals. Being a bit overwhelmed about being surrounded by hundreds of them I sat down for a minute. And just a second later I saw this young calf trough the fence, patiently waiting his turn in the chaos of the adults.
