Village - Soura bhalia sahi
amidst the hills of Rayagad block in the ghats of Gajapati district.
Known as Saura, Sora, Sabara , these tribes are inhabitants of southern Odisha and some parts of Andhra Pradesh.
The popular traditional belief of Odisha describes the presiding deity Lord Jagannath ws once worshipped as 'Neelamadhaba' by the Soura tribal clan. With the effort of King Indradyumna the deity shifted to the famous Puri temple.
That fueled the enthusiasm further while reaching these tribal villages and meeting the tribes.
Though there is some motorable road , but a good steep trek of 1 km is needed to reach these people. This village accommodates 17 households.
Major occupation was once shifting cultivation for them. Now with intervention of government and some well thought plans of NGOs people are taking up goat rearing, tamarind and other forest products selling as livelihood options.
The stream in the picture at a distance of 1 km down the hill is the only source of water for the entire village. I could see women carrying utensils along the way to get water. The judicious use of water could be seen in each of the households and that puzzles the incessant use of water by the urban population.
