#Repost @365daysofblackhistory: You Can Never Kill the Revolution - The Black Panther Party: Founded in 1966, in Oakland California by #HueyNewton and #BobbySeale (first photo), the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (“BPP”) was created as a way to collectively combat white oppression through mass organizing and community based programs. The BPP practiced militant self-defense and protected by California’s open carry laws of the time, members armed themselves, patrolled black communities and monitored police activity. They outlined their goals in The Ten-Point Program, which was a set of guidelines that stated their ideals and ways of operation, the first being “We want freedom. We want power to determine the destiny of our Black Community”.⠀ ⠀ From its inception, the Black Panthers received backlash from both government and police. The media and government made the Black Panthers notorious for their Afros, dark apparel, and willingness for armed self-defense. Their militarized approach was characterized as radical and the BPP was labeled a terrorist organization. ⠀ ⠀ The FBI Director at the time, J. Edgar Hoover, identified the BPP as the number one threat to US national security, igniting heightened surveillance and police presence targeted at the party. Hoover feared the BPP so much, he created an extensive counterintelligence program (COINTELPRO) with the mission to “neutralize black nationalists’ activities” and “prevent the rise of a black messiah” (as written in official FBI documents). Police followed and harrassed members and the FBI planted informants throughout the organization. BPP headquarter locations were subject to raids frequently.⠀ ⠀ Often times the positive impact the organization had on the community is overlooked. However, the #BlackPanthers launched programs that benefited black communities nationwide, like free dental care, breakfast for low-income children, even drama classes. Each morning members cooked breakfast for children in poor neighborhoods before school.⠀ (continued tomorrow…)⠀#theblackpanther #theblackpantherparty
