Was fortunate to be able to go out on @fishthefreedom Got into a couple pick bites but saw a lot of signs of life. Had some shots at bluefin early on but couldn’t manage one into the boat. Then I casted behind a pod of porpoise and hit a hungry little bluefin right in the mouth with a lively sardine who indulged me with a quick battle. After not taking full advantage of opportunities early, grateful to be able to take home a little butterball of a bluefin. Big thanks to Captain Tino and the crew.
On a side note, I recently acquired a pair of Salt Life’s sunglasses, the “Huntingtons” and they’re fire. Super comfy, polarized, and hydrophobic lenses made for easy living in the splash lane. @realsaltlife
Bluefin tuna- Thunnus orientalis is the species found in the Northern Pacific and is also known as Northern Bluefin tuna or Pacific Bluefin tuna. In Mexico the name is Atun de aleta azul which translates to tuna with fin blue. There are 3 species of Bluefin tuna, the largest being the Atlantic Bluefin- Thunnus thynnus which has a world record of 1496 pounds which is almost a 3/4 ton. These are the species that you see getting caught on Wicked Tuna and places like PEI. The Pacific Bluefin #IGFA world record was just broken a few years ago with a 907 pound 6 ounce monster caught out of New Zealand. There are junior and line class records available for this species and you can get more details at IGFA.org if you would like to target them, many line class records are still easily beatable with some of them being vacant. The easiest way to identify a bluefin is that as you can see in the photo, it has very short pectoral fins in relation to other tunas. This one was 75-80 pounds. In Mexican waters there is currently a limit of 2 fish per person and the same in California. With the recent change in limits down to 2 fish, California DFW has added filleting requirements to tuna while at sea so make sure you know the new rules before cleaning any tuna. #bluefin#bluefintuna#pacificbluefin#pacificbluefintuna#thunnus#thunnusorientalis#fishids#fishid#fishidentification#northernbluefin#northernbluefintuna
If you've been watching my "story" feed, you've seen this bluefin come to life. This would be step 10, but it would really be nothing without good references. Thanks to @rjefferybarr, @onedowner and @sketch_grace for the solid reference pics as well as dragging my ass around looking or trying to put me on these amazing fish. I'm guessing this will be a favorite at Fred Hall this year.
