We're going on a diet over the holidays…. a social and traditional media one that is! Will you join us? Trade in your phone, computer, or TV for some good books, walk outside with friends, or a good old-fashioned winter fireside chat with family. 🌞 We strongly recommend everyone we work develop a good self-care routine. Unless your job depends on it do you really need to absorb media all day? Yes, we know we are posting this on a social media channel but here us out! It wasn’t that many years ago people didn’t find out what happened that day until the nightly news at 6:oo pm, the morning newspaper or someone called to tell you what happened in their world. (Yes, we are old enough to remember those good ole days!) Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you decided you need to know everything happening with your friends, family, or the world off and on all day long? Human beings survived many generations without knowing right away. 🌞 In the last year, those of us advocating on one or more causes often open our social media feed and are bombarded by urgent or negative posts from friends. Overtime this can lead to burnout in the most seasoned advocates and organizers. According to a June 30, 2017 article in Forbes “6 Ways Social Media Affects Our Mental Health” there is cause for concern with our children but also with ourselves. Studies have found “social media use is linked to greater feelings of social isolation.” Not surprisingly, it turned out that the more time people spent on these sites, the more socially isolated they perceived themselves to be. And perceived social isolation is one of the worst things for us, mentally and physically.
