One of the most interesting questions heading into the 2018 season also happens to be one of the least talked about. Brett Gardner has quietly put together an excellent career in pinstripes. He has quietly etched his name into the Yankee record books a few categories as well. He sits at 241 career stolen bases. Good for fifth most in Yankees’ history and just 7 behind Hal Chase for a share of fourth place. Last season, Brett joined Jeter, Mattingly, Posada and Munson as the only Yankee draftees to collect 1,000 career hits. -
Gardy had an excellent season in 2017. He slashed .264/.350/.428 with a career high 21 home runs. He accumulated 108 wRC+ and a 3.8 fWAR. Not to mention, he did not commit a single error (flawed stat, I know, but it still says a lot). Gardner is a huge piece to this team on the field and off the field. He’s quietly one of their better players, and impacts the team in a huge way in the clubhouse. People forget that he’s the longest tenured Yankee. -
Now the question arises, with Brett due to hit free agency next offseason, what can we expect? I truly have no idea what to think. It probably is going to depend on how well he does in 2018. If he does well, maybe the Yanks give him the Andy Pettitte/CC treatment and go year by year. There are outfielders coming up in the farm such as Estevan Florial, so that could complicate things. Could Gardner leave for a different team in free agency? Is it possible that he even retires? What are your predictions for how this plays out? Comment below!
