In this popular 2.5 hour workshop we explore a range of arm balances and multiple approaches of getting into them. We’ll explore our relationship to gravity and learn the body mechanics and leverage needed to do these challenging poses with greater mindfulness and ease.
Besides just making for some inspiring Instagram snaps, arm balances are fun, powerful and beneficial. Yes, they can seem intimidating but Alex’s clear and simple instruction will demystify them.

Doctor Who has just re-opened the toilet wormhole and released Blonde Yoga Barbie and the super heroes from a parallel world. "Hello I am the Doctor and the Barbie mansion is being invaded by Cyber DCB and Cyber Ken, the Barbies need your help BYB". "Ahem nice to meet you Doctor but I was hoping you were the dishy, sexy Doctor". "Gosh you Barbies are all the same, going on about the David Tenant Doctor". "What that skinny runt, no i mean the gorgeous one with the floppy hair and bow tie". "Ahh ha ha that's more like it, yes my previous regeneration of Jon Pertwee was rather dishy, you have such good taste my dear". "Are you sick I mean the Matt Smith Doctor, the things I would do with him pinning him up against the Tardis console". "Yes well lets focus on what's on hand, you have to save the Barbie mansion, it's being invaded by cyber jelly babies, I have to go I have a secret mission to do, good luck BYB". "Thank you Doctor and if you ever want to visit my bedroom in your Matt Smith regeneration I will blow your bow tie off". BYB runs out to the Barbie grounds and sees the cyber jelly baby army with Cyber Ken and Cyber DCB, BYB sees wedding rings on their hands and her blonde hair turns white hot blonde. "You Brunette cyber bitch, so you finally married Ken, well now look at the state of you, you are now robots dressed in tin foil". DCB "Blonde human slut you can talk why is your dress made of toilet paper, did you go down the toilet one too many times". BYB "Ken is this what you want a brunette robot". Ken "Cyber Ken has no emotions, marriage is not important, but conquest of the Barbie mansion is all that matters". BYB "I going to turn you back to human and then I am going to kill you Ken". Ken "Jelly babies kill BYB". BYB picks up the first jelly baby and bites its head off, "Don't think much of your army Ken, super heroes eat all of the jelly babies". But DCB draws out a secret weapon.
I’m so inspired by my clients. We’ve been talking about the benefit of even just taking 10 minutes to ourselves, 10 minutes for quiet time, or for a walk, or maybe on the yoga mat. It’s easy to fall into an “all or nothing” mentality - so we’ve been discussing how to use it instead as a red flag- if we start to think “all or nothing” we can let that be a sign: ok wait, where can I find just 10 minutes. A yoga practice, for instance, doesn’t have to be a full hour, it doesn’t even have to be in a studio with an instructor. It can right at home or even in your office. It can just be a few sun salutations (shown here) or even just seated deep breathing! The breathing will help to turn off our stress response and then on our resting response. Yeah, that’s pretty awesome It’s a powerful thing when we make time for ourselves. It’s a matter of looking at our days and seeing where we can create space, or even: where we can reserve space just for us. Even just 10 minutes is incredible. Ah, the simplicity of a pose that works a complex joint such as the hips. Log pile is most certainly my nemesis...it has me holding and taking sharp intakes of breath and moving very, very slowly into it. This is one of those poses that dramatically highlights the stark differences between bodies. There is no way you can fake this. Well, I mean you could try, but I don’t think you’d be able to walk out of the room very easily! So I start with a tight crossed legged version and after what feels the right amount of time, I’ll make my way into this with as many props (a Pilates ball is an extremely good prop. Nice and squidgy) as I need/want. It’s a tough one but there’s no doubt that once both sides are done and I’ve come into another posture or I’m moving around my mat, my hips feel amazing.
We’ll be looking at the hips and this pose in my classes this week, I hope you’ll be able to join me...
